Conversation with Eva Beresin at Artissima 2021

On the occasion of Artissima 2021, we interviewed the artist Eva Beresin of the Charim Galerie in Vienna.

How was Eva Beresin born as artist?

I never dared to say I am a painter or an artist until I was about 64. I always only said I am painting but after all, it doesn't matter what you call it, the main thing is that you do it.

What does contemporary art mean for you?

Contemporary art takes up topics that are relevant to us. Like feminism, culture(s), globalisation, gender and now the pandemic. Thanks to the internet and social media, we have a vast amount of images and information floating around that artists can use for their own purposes. There is a variety of media, also through digital possibilities, which always enable new modes of expression.

The Magazine name is Quid Magazine, because investigate the quid which makes everything unique. Where does Eva find the quid?

Being unique is a mixture of what you genetically get into the cradle with your life long experiences. Seen in this way, it is not a static constant, nor is it a kind of qualification.

What is the Beauty according to you?

I've never looked for "beauty", so I can't really define what that means for me. I always found the interesting, extraordinary, exciting, persons and things attractive and beautiful.

We talk about your art. It is rare seeing paintings in the middle of this digital art. Does the painting is a strong communication medium yet?

Art is art which material medium or technique you find to be able to tell your story can be strong and of course painting is one of them.

We could see many figures, face, in your paintings. Could you talk about it? What is your poetry?

In most of my works I use my face and my body then put it at the centre in situations that are relevant to me, combined with my creatures that have been with me since my childhood.

What did you learn thanks to the lockdown?

First of all I have learned a lot about myself, suddenly finding myself in an unprecedented situation and I saw suddenly how little you actually need and how creative you can be to adapt your requirements to the new regulations. If it wasn't so tragic, it would be an enrichment.

Who could you consider your Master?

I couldn’t tell you only one because it wouldn’t be representative it always depended on the time and age I was in.

Come è nata Eva Beresin come artista?

Non ho mai osato dire di essere un pittore o un artista fino a quando non ho avuto circa 64 anni. Ho sempre solo detto che dipingo, ma dopotutto non importa come lo chiami, l'importante è farlo.

Cosa significa per te l'arte contemporanea?

L'arte contemporanea riprende temi che ci stanno a cuore. Come il femminismo, le culture, la globalizzazione, il sesso e ora la pandemia. Grazie a internet, ai social media, abbiamo in circolazione una grande quantità di immagini e informazioni che gli artisti possono utilizzare a proprio vantaggio. C'è una varietà dei medium, anche digitali, che consentono sempre nuove modalità di espressione.

Il nome della rivista è Quid Magazine, perché indaga il quid che rende tutto unico. Dove trova il quid Eva?

L'essere unici è una miscela di ciò che geneticamente ottieni nella culla con le tue lunghe esperienze di vita. Vista così, non è una costante statica, né una sorta di qualificazione.

Cos'è la Bellezza secondo te?

Non ho mai cercato la "bellezza", quindi non posso realmente definire cosa significhi per me. Ho sempre trovato le persone e le cose interessanti, straordinarie, eccitanti, attraenti e belle.

Parliamo della tua arte. È raro vedere dipinti nel mezzo di questa arte digitale. La pittura è ancora un forte mezzo di comunicazione?

L'arte è arte; qualsiasi medium, materiale o tecnica in grado di raccontare la tua storia può essere forte e ovviamente la pittura è una di queste.

Possiamo vedere molte figure, volti, nei tuoi quadri. Potresti parlarne? Qual è la tua poetica?

Nella maggior parte dei miei lavori uso il mio viso e il mio corpo per poi metterlo al centro di situazioni che mi interessano abbinate alle mie creature che mi accompagnano fin dalla mia infanzia.

Cosa hai imparato grazie al lockdown?

Prima di tutto ho imparato molto su me stessa trovandomi improvvisamente in una situazione senza precedenti. Ho capito quante poche cose ti servano effettivamente e quanto puoi essere creativo adattando le tue esigenze alle nuove normative. Se non fosse stato così tragico, oserei dire che è stato un arricchimento.

Chi potresti considerare un tuo maestro?

Non saprei dirtene solo uno perché non sarebbe rappresentativo è dipeso sempre dal tempo in cui si vive.
